1. YOU WILL CREATE A CHARACTER MAP  ABOUT  ONE OF THE CHARACTERS AFTER WATCHING THE BEGINNING OF THE MOVIE

  1. Watch the first 10 minutes of the movie Sarah, Plain and Tall by clicking on this youtube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhJs3wYuNh4
  2. When you are finished, complete the character map at http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/lit-elements/  For the title enter Sarah Plain and Tall and your name goes in the box next to "By". Click on Character Map and follow the instructions.  
  3. When finished print it out and give it to your teacher.

2. YOU WILL BE ANSWERING QUESTIONS REGARDING SARAH'S JOURNEY
  1. Click on Google Maps on the left.  This will show you three different routes that Sarah might have traveled while on her journey from Maine to Anna, Caleb and Father's house in Kansas. 
  2. Click on the purple words Sarah's Home
  3. Click on the blue words From Here
  4. In the box type "Kansas" and click Get Directions
  5. In the left hand column you will see three "suggested routes" with some information.  Use these pieces of information and the map to answer the questions on the handout.
  6. When finished hand the worksheet to your teacher
3.  COMPLETE A SETTING MAP BASED ON PICTURES OF EARLY KANSAS
  1. Click on this link; http://www.kshs.org/publicat/history/2005winter_hoy.pdf
  2. Use your pg up and pg dn keys to scroll through the pages to look at the pictures.  (You do not need to read this. Only look at the pictures).
  3. When you are finished complete the setting map at  http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/lit-elements/  For the title enter Sarah Plain and Tall and your name goes in the box next to "By". Click on Character Map and follow the instructions.  
    1. When finished print it out and give it to your teacher.

4. USE VOCABULARY RELATED TO SETTING
  1. Go to http://www.spellingcity.com/paragraphWriting-spelling-game.html?listId=8777623 and follow directions. Make sure to add your name. When finished let the teacher know.
  2. Play hangman by clicking on the tab to the left.
5. COMPARE MAINE TO KANSAS
  1. Watch a video at this link to get an idea of what Maine is like.  While watching this video ask yourself questions like "How is this different from Kansas?" http://www.visitmaine.com/attractions/ After you get to this website, look about halfway down the page, click on video, then click the play arrow.
  2. When finished use the handout to compare and contrast Maine to Kansas.  When completed turn in to teacher.
6. USE GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS TO PLAN YOUR FINAL PROJECT
  1. Complete the story pyramid handout.
  2. Go to this link and read about setting http://www.learner.org/interactives/literature/read/setting1.html
  3. Complete the story pyramid if the story took place in Maine.
  4. Write your summary of how the story would be different.  
  5. Create a new book cover based on this information. Be sure to check the rubric to make sure you have included all of the pieces necessary.
