EDU 649 Final Project: Understanding Other Cultures

This is such an exciting opportunity to be able to live video chat with other students in other cultures and learn about each other. Below are several things you should know before you begin. Please make sure you read through to understand what you will need to know to have a great experience.

Break Down:

          Pre-Activities
 

  • We will practice how we will conduct ourselves while skyping with other schools(be clear and loud, confident, be aware of not making funny gestures and any slang we use)
  • Know when/who we are calling
  • Decide on the questions that you will want to ask
  • Skype job opportunities to be distributed between each student (or group of students)
          During Call

  • Question and Answer session
  • Video and image recording
  • Summarize (blog)
  • Back channel (data recorder of what is being said and done)
  • Collect Data
  • Present findings
  • Share experience and what you have gained

         Post-Activities

  • We will debrief (evaluate and analyze) as a group
  • Create documentary using video clips
  • You will create a photo slideshow
  • You will do a post-reflection on the classroom blog
  • You will embed images and videos
  • We will share with parents
  • and finally you will make an audience presentation of your experience

What Are The Different Jobs For Skyping (15 roles):

  1. Calender and Collaboration Coordinator
  2. Greeter (the initial person to make introduction to the other culture)
  3. Sharer ( this person will share something special to the class or city, it could be a song, dance, local souvenir, etc)
  4. Questions & Answers Representative (responsible to ask questions that were decided as a group and keep conversation smooth) 
  5. Photographer (takes pictures of video images to document the skype interaction)
  6. Videographer (responsible in video recording the class while skyping.
  7. Back-Channel writers (documents the conversation, questions and answers and what is taking place while the skype is taking place) through a data entry program
  8. Back-Channel clean-up (responsible in going through and making sure information is transferred to a word document and checked for errors)
  9. Live-Blogger (blogs skype call live to classroom blog)
  10. Blogger Word Problem Creator (creates a word problem with the different information gained through the skype call and adds it to the classroom blog)
  11. Google Earth Recorder (responsible to find the distance in both miles and kilometers of our school and who we are skyping with)
  12. Google Maps Recorder (responsible to find the location of the class we are skyping with and adding it to the classroom blog)
  13. Information Gatherer (responsible for searching for information on the spot of questions that the partner classroom may ask) 
  14. Data Entry (responsible for adding collected data into an embedded Google form in the classroom blog)
  15. Time Recorder (responsible for keeping watch and record of start, end and elapsed time of Skype)
