Introduction

At high noon a shot rang out!

For some, this was the great beginning-a new chapter in their lives! A new adventure had begun! For others it was just one more journey they would take.

Would they find the perfect spot for their new home or would they have to settle somewhere that was less than perfect? Would they be able to make a home in this new and strange land? Would their story be one of success or would the challenges and trials be too much for them?

On April 22, 1889 the United States Government opened many acres of land for habitation. It was free for the taking! The first person to get to a particular location and stake a claim was to be the new owner.

Oklahome has a nick name; it is the Sooner State. Why do you think this could be? how did it get this name?
