Supporting Neurodevelopment in the NICU Through Kangaroo Care

Introduction

20161122120218yneLy.jpg

Welcome to this unit of instruction on supporting neurodevelopment in the NICU through kangaroo care!

In the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) often primary focus is placed on maintaining physiological stability, and other interventions such as nurturing neurodevelopment are seen as secondary in nature. However, neurodevelopment can be equally important especially when families prepare for life beyond the NICU. Kangaroo care is a simple intervention that is associated with several benefits, including neurodevelopmental support. It is an intervention that is implemented early and often, which is why this unit of instruction was created, so newly hired NICU RNs will be able to properly implement kangaroo care on their own.
