Diabetes is a complex and lifelong disease that requires close monitoring daily in order to prevent further complications throughout the body. Diabetesis a disorder of how your body uses food for to produce energy and nourishment to meet the body's needs. When a person has diabetes there is a problem with the the pancreas, which is the bodys producer and regulator for insulin. Insulin allows your body to break down the sugars and fat in the foods you eat, when a person's pancreas is not functioning properly the patients blood sugars will rise and the patient will be diagnosed as a diabetic.  There are three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.

Diabetes is typically managed through self-care whenever possible.  Some of the everyday tasks for a diabetic include:  making the right food choices,e xercise, monitoring your blood sugar, understanding medications and taking them correctly.  By understanding what diabetes is and how the treatments work you can prevent further complications of the disease.
