The Pythagorean Theorem and Its Many Applications

Introduction

baseball(11).jpg

  • You are the catcher on your town's baseball team. You know that the distance between home plate and first base on the field you play at is 60 ft. Since the baseball diamond is a square, this means that the distance between first base and second base is also 60 ft.

  • You want to figure out the distance between home plate and second base. You want to know how far you have to throw the ball to get runners out who are trying to get to second base.

  • You model the situation by drawing a diagram of it. The diagram is shown above. The situation makes a triangle and you know that two of the sides are 60 ft. You want to figure out the third side. It seems like it should be pretty easy but you're not for sure of the answer.

  • That's okay because this WebQuest will give you the tools to find out exactly how to find this distance. Once you learn how, you will be able to solve many other real-world problems by using the same result.
