Between the Tides

Introduction

beautiful_intertidal_zones(1).jpg

Of all the vast ocean, the intertidal zone is the only part of the marine world that can be experienced firsthand without leaving our own natural element. The intertidal zone is the shoreline between the high and low tide marks. Intertidal communities are among the most studied and best understood of all marine communities. Although the intertidal is made up of only a tiny portion of the marine environment, lessons learned in the intertidal have added to our understanding of marine ecology and ecology in general.

You are a marine biologist studying on Christmas Island, in the Indian Ocean. You have ONE task. You must study the intertidal communities and determine the differences between zones that have rocky and soft bottoms. You must also become familiar with these terms: spray zone, high tide zone, middle tide zone, and the low tide zone. Know when each occurs in the intertidal zone and know how to determine the differences of each zone. As you continue throughout the Web Quest more questions will arise for you to answer. Through your studies and observations you must create a journal entry noting what you have learned and how it applies to the importance of everyday life. Good luck.

The game begins now.
