Living Things

All living things have certain characteristics which make them different from objects which are not alive. Living things reproduce, feed, respire - that is, they release energy from their food, often combining it with oxygen. They grow, they excrete - which is getting rid of substances which they do not want, they move, they are sensitive and they are made up of cells. Organisms also interact with their environment. One important way of studying living things is to study them where they live.

Animals and plants do not live in complete isolation. They are affected by their surroundings, called their environment. Their environment is also affected by them. The study of the interaction between living organisms and their environment is a branch of biology called ecology.

Let us explore some more about living things.
