Students may now do an ENGINEERING project OR an experimental project. You may choose which type of project you want to do. Many of the steps are the same for both. READ carefully the methods and requirements for whichever project type you choose to pursue.

  • The scientific method is a way to ask and answer scientific questions by making observations and doing experiments.
  • The steps of the scientific method are to:
    • Ask a Question
    • Do Background Research
    • Construct a Hypothesis  (you might not have a formal hypothesis until you've completed your research.)
    • Test Your Hypothesis by Doing an Experiment
    • Analyze Your Data and Draw a Conclusion
    • Communicate Your Results
  • It is important for your experiment to be a fair test. A "fair test" occurs when you change only one factor (variable) and keep all other conditions the same.
  • This site can help you through many steps of your project; be careful to ALSO pay attention to CPS's requirements. CPS has some different requirements than Science Buddies: www.sciencebuddies.org

  • The design method is a way to ask and answer design and engineering questions by making observations and testing design prototypes.
  • The steps of the scientific method are to:
  •       -Ask a Question
  •       -Do Background Research
  •       -Define a Need (for your design)
  •       -Test A Prototype
  •       -Analyze Your Results and Draw a Conclusion
  •       -Communicate Your Results
  • It is important that your design have a purpose and your test be documented with comments on how it could be re-designed to work more effectively.
