What Lies Beneath
Welcome
Welcome: What Lies Beneath
Description:
Did you know that the owner of a piece of land only owns the top few centimetres of it? If a precious mineral was found in your backyard, it wouldn't belong to your family. It would be up to other people, who you probably have never met, and who are not from your community, to decide whether or not someone else was allowed to dig up your backyard, and maybe knock down your house, and extract the mineral. Precious minerals are just that because they are rare. It makes them expensive, and to some extent, they are considered a public resource, because everyone benefits from them. Coal makes electrcity which we all need and use. Iron ore makes steel which is integral to the infrastructure of our country. But how would you feel if someone wanted you to move away from your home so that they could get to what lay beneath? Even if they promised to rebuild your house and replant your garden and leave it exactly as it had been before when they had finished? Would you want a say in that decision?
