Where the Red Fern Grows
Process
Billy had to work for a long time to earn enough money to buy his dogs.
He kept his money in an old coffee tin. How hard would it be for you to
earn enough money for 2 dogs? Find two dogs that you would want as your
own on the Petfinder website and then create a budget that details what
you'd have to do to get them. Your budget should include 5 different
jobs or chores that you could do for a source of income and an estimate
of how much you think you should get paid.
1. Finding your dogs:
Using the Petfinder website: Enter in the zipcode: 30034 into the
window. Leave the rest of the form blank and push the orange search
button. Look at the listed dogs until you've found two dogs that you are
interested in. Write down their breeds and the cost of the adoption
fees.
2. Creating a budget. Follow the directions on the website to create your own budget. Print out your completed budget worksheet.
After
he trained his dogs, he began hunting. His mother made him a coon skin
hat. Watch the youtube video that gives instructions on how to make a
coonskin hat.
3. Make instructions for how to make your very own coonskin hat.
Watch the youtube video and then create a list that uses at least 5
sequence words. Create illustrations to go with each of your steps along
the process. You might have to watch the video a couple of times and
pause it to write down important parts of the process.
Dan was
killed by a Mountain Lion at the end of the book. Most of the time, the
two dogs found themselves going head-to-head with raccoons. Read the two
websites about Mountain Lions and Raccoons.
4. Compare and contrast Mountain Lions and Raccoons.
Create a Venn diagram that compares and contrasts raccoons and mountain
lions. Each category should have at least 5 facts or observations.
Now that we've finished the book, it's time to take a look back and see what was important.
5. Writing a summary of "Where the Red Fern Grows".
Click on the "TV411 Summarizing" website and complete the activities.
When you've completed them, type out a summary of "Where the Red Fern
Grows".
Now that we've read the whole book and summarized what it's about, we're ready to design the cover of the book.
6. Making a book cover: Click on the "Read Write Think" website and follow the steps indicated. Select the black and white printer and begin designing your own cover for "Where the Red Fern Grows".
