1)Before you begin, you will need to brush up on some history.  Use the first URL - The Dust Bowl - to answer the following background questions:

a)  Find the US map.  List the 5 states that made up the Dust Bowl.
b)  How many years did the dust blow?
c)  What color was the dust blowing from the south?  What color was it from the north?
d)  What caused the Dust Bowl to occur?  Explain.
e)  How did poor farming practices contribute to the dust?

2)  Go back to the title page, click on the movie link and watch the slide show there.  List 3 IMPORTANT facts that help to give you more of an idea of life back then.

3)  Click on URL 7 - Dust Bowl Movie - take a look at more real life images of the Dust Bowl. 
DESCRIBE what you see using FIVE SPECIFIC adjectives.  NO USING words like gross, bad, hard.  BE SPECIFIC and DETAILED.

Name/List THREE of the photos that either disturbed you the most OR touched you in some way.  Describe what you see and tell me what about that picture bothered you or moved you.

5)  Now go to URL 4 and 5 - Personal Accounts of the Dust Bowl and Children's Lives During the Dust Bowl - Read the information on both pages and click on the personal movie accounts of at least TWO people on URL 4 - Personal Accounts.  Then, list TEN IMPORTANT DETAILS OR FACTS you learned from both websites:

6)  GET READY TO WRITE!  After you have completed your research/notes (#s 1 - 5 above), you are ready to write.  Please go to the last website - URL 6 - Popular Names from 1935, and choose a pseudonym - a new name you will be going by appropriate for this particular time.  Make sure you get other names down as you will need to use them as either friends or family members if you reference any in your journal entry.

7)  In three to four paragraphs, please complete a full page journal or diary entry as though you were a real life teen living during this bleak moment in time.  Please see the "Task" page for a review of what points to consider writing.  Be as detailed and authentic as possible.  REMEMBER TO USE FIRST PERSON POINT OF VIEW!  The events are happening to YOU directly!  Rough draft can be written in pen/pencil; however, final draft must be typewritten and double-spaced.
