Geometry in the World Around Us

Introduction

egytianpyramids(1).jpg

In a typical high school math class, students constantly ask, "When am I ever going to use this in the real world?" The teacher then usually gives a lecture on how the principals of mathematics are applied to all kinds of aspects of the world around us. Now, it is your job as the student to stop asking those questions and find some answers. It's time to make an actual connection between mathematics and the world around us.

Geometric concepts are used all over the world in architecture, art, nature, and beyond. It is evident, that these artists and architects have used geometric properties to inspire and enrich their works of art.

Over the years, all of this work has been captured in photographs and images. These photographs and images are then placed on the web for everyone to see. It is your job to use the web, and search all over the world, for examples of these works of art. The photos or images you choose must highlight eight geometric concepts that we have learned this year. Finally, you will present all of your findings to the class using a PowerPoint presentation.

Now take a trip around the world, be creative, and experience how geometry is used in the world around us.
