Welcome: Mary Seacole an Independent Woman and War Hero
Description: The life of Mary Seacole was extraordinary even by modern standards. Taking into account that she was a woman and a person of color living in the Victorian period of the British Empire her accomplishments stand as a monument to human courage and defiance of sexism and racism. She was a healer and a war veteran who financed her own transportation to the war zone as well as her own upkeep during the war. She saved the lives of a great number of men who fell sick or injured in the Crimean war. She treated people for cholera in Jamaica, Panama, and Crimea all while maintaining a hotel and sundry business.
