Welcome: Understanding ELL - Goals, Expectation & Activities for Generarl Education Teachers
Description: New York City is a diverse city. According to NYC Population Facts on the website called NYC Planning, there are over 200 languages spoken there. NYC has a population of 8,550,405 in 2015. New York City has the largest population of Chinese outside of Asia. 2.4 million Hispanics and 1.89 million are black non-Hispanic also reside in this urban jungle. If this is the population of NYC can you imagine what public schools would be like? With an increase of new people arriving from different countries, how can public schools prepare themselves to meet the needs of current non-English speaking students as well as newcomers? How can schools provide the same quality of educational standards with English Language Learners as native English speaker? These are some of the questions we will address in this webquest. In this webquest, we will learn about how non-English speaking students learn a language. Then by understanding this context can we delve deeper into how we can use current bilingual learning standards (or learning progressions) to modify our small group lessons to better help ELLs. By understanding the way ELL learns, we can help non-English speakers and their families better understand a new world.
