Welcome: The Exploration of Orchestral Instruments in America
Description: This WebQuest is designed to help fourth grade string students develop a knowledge of a wide array of musical genres within the orchestral string family. The overall goal of this exploration is to expose first time string students to other types of music that they would otherwise not have listened to. Stringed instruments have a variety of musical colors and nuances that are specific to many styles of music. Although students are learning only the fundamentals of playing in their first year, it is important for them to see their instruments in formal and informal settings in hopes to increase motivation. A formal setting, for example might consist of a concert violinist soloing with the New York Philharmonic and an informal setting might be an old time fiddler playing with some friends at a festival campsite. Students can also benefit from observing accompaniment and melody. Students will be directed to YouTube videos and select websites and while working with a partner, will answer questions pertaining to various musical settings involving the orchestral string family.
