Welcome: Literature Circles and Analyzing Stories from the Modern South
Description: Have you ever read a story that you loved? What about reading a story that you hated? Why or why not? The act of analysis is literally the act of separating a whole into parts in order to understand that whole. For your assignment you are essentially being asked to analyze some aspect of one or more short stories. The 6 short stories that we will be analyzing here are "The Ugliest Pilgrim" by Doris Betts, "Time of Bitter Children" by George Garrett, "Blue Dive" by Fred Chappel, "The Geologist's Maid" by Anne Taylor,"Revenge" by Ellen Gilchrist, and "Children of their Birthdays" by Truman Capote which starts on page 197 in Stories of the Modern South. These stories can be analyzed according to their theories in Literature. Any analysis of a literary work requires that the writer understand the intention (i.e., the theme) of the work and how that theme is revealed in the course of the work.
