Discovering the Harlem Renaissance

I think that most of this WebQuest is pretty self-explanatory and does not need much help in the way of guidance.  However, I do want to note that the Discovery Sheet that is mentioned again and again can be found at the bottom of each Role Sheet (found on the Process page) once the Word Document is opened.  Please also note that the Discovery Sheets differ based on the students' roles, so you cannot just open one of the Word Documents and print its Discovery Sheet for all roles.

I think that this WebQuest is excellent for use across departments.  For instance, the Language Arts/English teacher could have all of her students perform the role of Talent Agent, and the History teacher could have all of her students perform the role of Historian.

The WebQuest can also be used to steer a research component/paper in any curriculum.  It really scaffolds the research to the younger students (grades 8 - 9/10), and it can act as a first step for older students (grades 10/11 - 12) to introduce them to specific topics.

I want to note on the quality of the sources.  Almost all of them could be used in a college level paper.  I can recall only one that I specifically knew was not of scholarly research value, for it was on About.com.  Unfortunately, I could not find a single electronic source publicly available to my students.  I therefore had to include it.  However, this brings me to one additional point.  As the students begin this assignment, I think it is important to stress to the availability of printed material to supplement any further inquiries they may have on their topics.  I do not think that they should feel completely limited to the electronic sources.  The inclusion of About.com also provides them an opportunity to learn what is and what is not a scholarly website (e.g., look for ".edu," etc.).

If anyone believes any comments or changes to suggest or any clarification needs, please just post to the Reviews page.  Thanks, and I hope your students enjoy it as much as I hope mine enjoy it!
