This webquest is important for young children because it encourages them to do developmentally appropriate research about a topic. Oftentimes in grades K to 2 doing research is difficult because students cannot read very well yet. For this reason much of the research that students will do throughout this webquest will be done with videos and games that they do not need to be able to read for. To prepare students for this possible obstacle I suggest modeling the webquest each day before students interact with it independently. That way students will be able to focus more on the activities rather than struggling to read directions. I suggest using this webquest over the course of 5 school days. In addition, I suggest students know who their partner and small group will be for certain activities before the issue arises.

This webquest to explore and write research reports about Arctic Animals goes along with Common Core / Ohio Science Content Standards as well as Common Core English Language Arts Standards. Please see the following list of standards:

Science

K.LS.1: Living things have specific characteristics and traits.

Living things grow and reproduce and can be found worldwide.

K.LS.2: Living things have physical traits and behaviors, which influence their survival.

Living things are made up of a variety of structures. Some traits can be observable structures. Some of these structures and behaviors influence their survival

Writing Text Types & Purposes

2. Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.

Special thank you to Dr.Kuo from Kent State University for introducing me to the idea of creating a Webquest.

Other

I would highly recommend if teachers have any extra help such as parents, aides, tutors, Special Education Teachers, ect. that they utilize them during the time frame students are interacting with the webquest. Again, this is not because students will not be able to navigate through activities, it is due to reading level.
