A Confederate Winter in Dalton

This assignment is designed to help students look at the Civil War, and all war, through the eyes of a soldier. Most of the time the lessons we provide concerning such topics contain a list of events, dates, names, and results, and we ask the students to spit it back at us on a multiple choice test. This assignment allows them to discover on their own details they would not have uncovered in a typical Civil War lesson. They must place themselves there, and imagine what the experience was like. They are forced to evaluate the decisions that caused an individual soldier to go to war in the first place, and they must decide whether it was worth the cost.  The entire project should take about a week to complete, and will provide the students with a much deeper understanding concerning the battles of Chickamauga and Chattanooga than they could ever garner from a few lines in a textbook.
