Using Visual Thinking Strategies

Visual Thinking Strategies can be applied to any content area. I have used this to introduce math concepts, science lessons, and to introduce certain books. The key is to ask the same three questions every single time. You want to generate a discussion between the students, using those questions as a guide. There is no bad interpretation of the picture you use, but if you see the students are starting to get off topic, simply guide them back by pointing something out in the picture. The first time you do this activity, it will definitely take a full 45 minute period or longer. You need time to introduce the activity by modeling it for the students. Give them time to have a discussion with their partner or small group. Depending on the size of the class and amount of pictures you are able to print out, you might have to group the students in groups of 3 or 4. Either way, this activity is a great way to keep the students engaged and obtain a deeper understanding of the content.
