Introduction: In
the world of Special Education, there is always a need to bridge the gap
between the students with special needs and their typical peers. It is also
important to show the world that while these students do have challenges, they
also have gifts. Art is the component that can level the playing field, helping
society to see the beauty that is at the tip of all of our hands: We are more
alike than different. Along with sending that BIG message, this lesson will
also address social skills. Students in special education often need additional
instruction in understanding appropriate things to say to people during social
events. Learning about celebrations, including those from other countries, and
the corresponding greetings that go with those celebrations, will help to
increase your students understanding as well as his or her skills to
communicate appropriate expressions. The goal of this WebQuest is to provide
opportunities to create art, learn social skills, create inclusion, promote
collaboration, and teach technical skills and new vocabulary knowledge for
challenged students.

Learners  This is created for high school students in moderate to severe
special education classes. These are typically 9th to 12th
graders. This can be adjusted for students in the middle school grades if there
is sufficient technology and support to create collaboration with peers.

Other

Process- This WebQuest is designed in daily segments. Each segment will hopefully last only one period. Regrouping of activities can be modified if time demands do not coincide with the actual schedule of the classroom. This activity should be done over a period of two weeks. Any additional time for artwork may be beneficial to students as art is a creative process taking an undetermined amount of time to complete.

The teacher should give each student the rubric, clearly explaining the expectations of the students art work and participation. Depending on the cognitive ability of the students, the teacher may decide to set the rubric aside, acknowledging that any effort should be given full credit in the case of students with severe disabilities.

The teacher will need to use a matching game (file attached) using icons/symbols and celebration titles that the students can use to associate appropriate symbols with given celebrations. Visuals of the icons should be laminated as should the text of the celebration so that this matching game can be played again in the future.

Throughout this process, the who, what, when, where, and why questions can be asked on a daily basis:
Who do we make cards for?
What do we celebrate?
When do we send cards?
Why do we send cards?
Where do we put cards once we address them? Where do they end up?

Setting up the sales table so that the students can sell their artwork (cards) to staff should be considered additional and done if the students choose into this activity. It should not count towards their evaluation-just a fun addition to their hard work.

Resources:
Written directions on how to scan art into computer and modify in another application-teacher may choose to make this part of the adult responsibilities in this Webquest, eliminating the responsibility from the student, or choosing only to show the student how it is done.
Computers with access to the internet
i-Pads
pic-monkey or other art software programs to modify art work
scanner
access to a print shop
envelopes
Smart boards, if possible
Art supplies: brushes, watercolors, watercolor paper, papers, pencils, crayons, chalks, pastels and markers.
Worksheets:
1. Matching Game (must be done and laminated by the teacher before beginning the Webquest).

Matching Game
Description: This activity would be best utilized if 2 copies were made so that students could work in groups of four. Printing the sheets onto cardstock and then laminating them before cutting the icons apart is also recommended. This game is color coded for an additional level of support often needed in the special education classroom.
