Coaster Crazy--A Roller Coaster Webquest

Teacher Page

Focus: This WebQuest primarily focuses on the physics behind roller coasters and the history behind roller coasters. The WebQuest will get the students ready to complete an actual 3D model of a potential roller coaster to demonstrate their understanding of what they have learned.

Objectives/Goals: I would recommend having the students experiment with acceleration and velocity before completing this WebQuest. It would give them some information that this WebQuest does not give. It will also give them some vocabulary they will be able to use.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the following terms:

Potential Energy, Kinetic Energy, Transfer of Energy, Velocity, Speed, Slope, Force, and Friction.

Students will create an original product to demonstrate an understanding of the vocabulary words.

Students will use technology to obtain information, analyze information, and synthesize the information.

Resources:

Prerequisite Skills: Students must be able to use Microsoft Word, Time Liner, and other Microsoft products. Students must also be able to navigate the web.

Time Required: The WebQuest will take at least two 120 minute classes. The creation of the final project will take at least 3 weekends at home. Then 1 day for presentations, calculating the speed, and the fair.

Technology/Materials needed: Computers for each student. Sample materials to make the coaster.

Credits: Most of the resources (except for the documents) were taken from sources on the web. I thank them for providing quality resources for students to learn from and the free use of those materials. All pictures were taken from Google images.
