Copyright and Fair Use

Teacher Page

This WebQuest challenges students to create a YouTube-style video based on what they've learned about copyright and fair use. That's the simple explanation. Now the more complicated one: As teachers, we are always looking for new and interesting ways to teach (and reach) our students. I think WebQuests in general, and this one specifically, qualify as new and interesting. The YouTube angle really engages students. But it's more than engagement. It's about teamwork, multimodal learning and critical thinking. I love the idea of having students take on different roles and yet work together to create something based on what they've learned. I also think that digital literacy is a must! In today's digital world, learning about copyright and fair use just seems like common sense.
I hope you decide to use this WebQuest in your classroom. You should allow a solid week or so from beginning to end. I suggest starting on a Tuesday and ending on a Wednesday to allow at least one weekend for shooting video. If your school does not allow access to YouTube, you can still use this WebQuest - just use TeacherTube instead! Or, upload the videos to another host - like Vimeo. Also, if cameras are difficult to come by, a smartphone could be used in a pinch!
At he end of the project, the teacher should have a "viewing" and "critiquing" day. This would be a good time to recruit the class to be "YouTube Judges" and vote on which group gets the sponsorship!!!
This WebQuest could also be used as a professional development tool for teachers!
