Film Studies: The Silent Era (1915-1928) LESSON #2

This Webquest is intended for students who are learning about the history of film for the first time.  This Webquest is intended for high school students.  This is just a broad overview to the silent era.  For a more in depth look in the history of American film, please consult my main source American Film: A History by Jon Lewis, Norton Publishing, 2008.

 

Adaptations (For Students With Learning Disabilities)- Instead of a paper, they will be asked for a simple response to F.W. Murnau's "Sunrise".  What they thought...Did they think the movie was entertaining?

 

Extensions (For Gifted Students) - These students would be asked to pick clips from F.W. Murnau's "Sunrise" and anyalize their importance to the plot and their visual importance.

 

TEACHER NOTES:

 -MAKE SURE THE KIDS ARE STAYING ON TASK!  Perhaps prohibiting all other sites, other than the ones shown, should be done so the kids stay on task.  Make sure their taking notes.

 -Ultimately, this is their assignment to pay close attention to.  By making sure their focusing by prohibiting access to other sites might be necessary.  

 -Implement a group discussion after their done viewing all the sites.  Ask for general reactions.

-Visual Arts-Media: Students will understand, select and apply media, techniques and processes.

-Visual Arts-History and Cultures: Students will understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures.

-Visual Arts-Content: Students will consider, select and apply a range of subject matter, symbols and ideas

 

 

For Teachers:  Based off of the State of Connecticut's Common Core of Teaching: Discipline-Based Professional Teaching Standards for Teachers of Visual Art

-I.Knowledge of Visual Arts: Representative artists, artworks and objects

-III.Importance of the Visual Arts: Art Teachers understand the nature and significance of the visual arts.
