Teacher Page

Estimated Time:

Students will complete the unit in 46-50 hours.  A lab that meets 3 hours per day will complete the unit in 3-4 weeks.  Time will be extended for those requiring additional lab time.  Those who are advancing quickly will serve as mentor to those needing additional assistance.

Student Knowledge/Skill Level:

Students should be at the Advanced level in Web Development Software.  Students should be at the Novice level in regards to planning a Web site with a client.  Students will have the necessary software skills but will learn how to apply those skills in a professional business environment.  Upon completion of this unit students will have the necessary skills to work in the business environment to create professional Web sites in the business sector.  Students will also have a solid foundation for further educational opportunities in a post-secondary educational institution.

Prerequisite Courses or Experiences:

Students should have completed a unit in Web Development Software.  Students should know what software programs are available for Web development and have experience in using the functions and features of one or more software packages.  Students should know how to define a Web site, add content to a Web site, and publish a Web site.  Previous Web sites created should include background colors, color schemes, text, graphic elements, tables, forms, bullet lists, numbered lists, image maps, buttons, frames, style sheets, rollovers, video, audio, slide shows, and animations.  Students will now take these skills and use them to plan, design and create a professional Web site to be used by a business, organization or individual(s).

Pre-Assessment:

Students will participate in an informal discussion group where each student tells the group what prior experience in and out of school they have had.  Students will express their individual interest level in Web site development.  Students will present a Web site completed during the Web Development Software Unit or a Web site created for themselves or someone else that displays prerequisite content listed above.

Essential/Critical Question:
·  What processes and procedures would you implement in order to create a professional Web site that would have positive impact in regard to communication, enlightenment, persuasion, promotion and/or competition?
Unit Questions:
·  Why is a timely, accurate, interactive and well-designed Web site important in order for an individual, organization or business to achieve their goals?
·  How can content such as text, photos, multimedia, animations, audio and video contribute to the effectiveness and value of a Web site?
·  How can proper layout with focal points, color schemes, tables, style sheets, and alignments help to establish a visual connection between the Web site home page and secondary pages?
·  How can visual contrast of font and graphic elements on a Web page attract viewers and make a site visually exciting and interesting?
·  How can multimedia, such as slide shows, animations, audio, video, and interactive forms, be used to take your Web site to the next level?
Problems Unit will address:
·  Many companies, organizations and individuals lack a Web site that is effective and interactive in order to achieve set goals.
·  Many Web sites lack the proper planning and design necessary to make their site effective and functional.
·  Value-added content must be thoroughly planned for a Web site in order to further the objectives and not merely add volume.
·  Web pages that are not visually connected lead to confusion and lack of effectiveness in achieving Web site goals.
·  Typography and graphics that are not applied effectively lack communication in literal and implied meaning and do not help to enhance the Web site mood.
·  Many sites do not offer multimedia and/or interactivity that add a dimension of excitement and entertainment to attract and retain site visitors.

Client(s) who need a Web site

Facilities (Environmental) Requirements:

Computer Lab with Web Development software will be used for planning, design and creation of the Web site.

A facility to meet with client(s) (may be at the client’s location or in a school conference room) will be needed to discuss goals and objectives of the Web site.  This facility will also be used to meet for updates and progress reports with the client(s).

Formative Assessment:

Students will complete and continually update a Design Plan with the client(s).  Students will use the Design Plan Checklist to ensure the Design Plan is complete.  Students will use the Design Plan to Storyboard the Web site and present it to the client(s).  Students will then update the design plan to further meet client(s) needs.  All supporting documentation is attached with the lesson plans.

Summative Assessment:

Summative assessment will consist of a completed and functioning Web site that is approved by the client(s).  The Web Site Creation Rubric will be used by the teacher for scoring the final project.  Client(s) will also complete a worksheet that provides feedback as to the professionalism, accuracy, and timeliness of the project team.

Teacher Tips:

The unit developers recommend students work in groups of two.  This allows for each student to have a variety of roles and responsibilities.  It may be best to group an extroverted and introverted student in order to provide effective communication with the client.  Some students are hesitant to communicate with someone they do not know while others excel at this.

It may be difficult to find a business, organization or individual who does not already have a Web site.  Students may be permitted to work with a business, organization or individual who does have a Web site that needs updating and enhancing.  Students will still create a new Web site for the client(s) and allow the client(s) to provide ideas for the new Web site.
