This webquest focuses on parts and uses of maps. It meets the following Indiana state standards:

Social Studies

(2.3.1) Use cardinal and intermediate directions to locate places on maps and places in the classroom, school, and community.

(2.3.5) Identify map symbols for land and water forms, and give examples of these physical features in the local community.

(2.3.6) Identify map symbols of cultural or human features — such as roads, highways, and cities — and give examples from the local region.

Objectives/goals:

· Students will identify legends.

· Students will identify neatlines, titles, and cardinal directions.

· Students will research types and purposes of maps.

· Students will use creativity and new knowledge to construct their own map.

· Students will have understand content area enough to share their knowledge with the class.

This webquest will require that students have some previous practice using the internet. The links are not complicated, but may be confusing to a new user. It will also require that a student have some prior knowledge of directions (north, south, east, and west, degrees in the middle are not necessary). The teacher will need to provide blank paper for the students to create their on.
