This lesson was developed as part of the requirements for EDED 4346 Science Methods Early Childhood and Elementary Levels Class at Texas A&M University- San Antonio.  The WebQuest will have students explore assigned websites to gather facts and discuss in cooperative groups (teams) to present their findings. They will  work cooperatively in teams to complete tasks with videos, images, games, and individually complete an in-class quiz to gain the knowledge about the characteristics of the moon.  Although, this lesson is anchored to fifth grade, it can be extended to additional grades ( 3rd & 4th) to explore and compare the relationships of the Earth, Sun, and Moon.

Students prior knowledge- The Solar System- Earth and Sun

This WebQuest will be completed in 5 days with students working in teams for Day 2 and Day 3 to explore the assigned websites and create a poster board. On Day 5, students will individually complete the in-class quiz.  The overall evaluation will be the presentation of the poster board and quiz.

Steps to present the lesson:

Engage: Introduce the Bill Nye video and provide each student with the questions that they will answer during the video.

Explore: Assign students in groups of three. Once in groups, have students access the WebQuest on computer lab computers to answer the assigned questions.

Explain: Divide the class into teams to create a poster board. Students will have access to the video on the phases of the moon. Each team will present their creative poster  board to the class.

Elaborate: Have students complete the online games. They will be provided as many attempts as necessary to ensure that they will get all of the answers correct. They will submit their results once completed.

Evaluate: Administer the in-class quiz to each student. Once they have completed it they will submit it for grading.

Materials needed:

Computer lab computers
Poster board
Crayons/Markers
Science Notebook
Assigned websites: BillNye-TheMoon  TheMoon  PhasesOfTheMoonCalendar

Overall Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated on how well they work cooperatively in groups to complete the poster board presentation and quiz.

Conclusion:
This lesson will provide  students opportunities to actively participate in their own learning.  The WebQuest will provide the motivation to internalize the content, which can extend their learning with a class field trip to NASA.

Standards

National Science Education Standard: Science as inquiry

Science Content TEK: 5th grade

(8)Earth and space. The student knows that there are recognizable patterns in the natural world and among the Sun, Earth, and Moon system. The student is expected to:
(D)identify and compare the physical characteristics of the Sun, Earth, and Moon.

Science Process TEKS: (2) Scientific investigation and reasoning. The student uses scientific methods during laboratory and outdoor investigations. The student is expected to:
(F)communicate valid conclusions in both written and verbal forms; and

(G)construct appropriate simple graphs, tables, maps, and charts using technology, including computers, to organize, examine, and evaluate information.

Learning Objective: Using a WebQuest, students will explain and illustrate the characteristics of the moon in 5 days.

Accommodations for ELL students: Providing online dictionaries in students native language to help build vocabulary and background knowledge.

Providing the unique tool of the Glogster to allow students to create interactive posters to communicate ideas, in which they can attach media links, sound, and video for poster presentations.

Providing online virtual field trips for a more authentic learning experience.
