Focus:
This WebQuest basically focuses on the book, Watsons Go To Birmingham-- 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis.  Reading concepts covered will be point of view, author's purpose, and book themes.  Students will also learn about the Civil Rights Movement.

Objectives/Goals:
I would recommend that students finish reading and discussing the book before beginning the project.  Students should have already done some research and discussion concerning the Civil Rights Movement and how the family's trip during this time period has affected each character.

  • Students will learn of the themes consistent throughout the book, including the Civil Rights Movement.
  • Students will learn to research using the world wide web.
  • Students will analyze characters.
  • Students create a PowerPoint presentation.

Resources:
Prerequisite Skills: Comfort level with the Internet
Time Required: Time required to read and discuss book plus one week of 1 hour computer lab sessions.

Technology Needs/Materials Needed
Individual computers with web access,

PowerPoint, KidPix, Kidspiration, Timeliner software
