This lesson was developed as part of Spring Arbor University's Integrating Technology into the Classroom.  I am a high school Spanish teacher and wanted to come up with a WebQuest that could help my students explore the Spanish culture more in depth and yet independently so as to encourage inner motivation.

The mantra of every high school student is, "Why am I learning this?" To which teachers grumble, because it's what the state has me teaching you.

This time, give an answer that MATTERS. If teachers make the learning APPLICABLE so that students can find the learning RELEVANT, the classroom will be a much more happy and productive place all around.

Spanish is the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world (after English, Chinese, and Hindustani). According to some counts, it actually has more native speakers than English does. However, besides the numbers there are a plethora of other reasons to learn Spanish:

1. Better understanding of English.
2. Knowing your neighbors.
3. Travel
4. Cultural understanding
5. Learning other languages
6. It's easy

Check out http://spanish.about.com/cs/forbeginners/a/whylearnspanish.htm?p=1 for the whole article, Why Learn Spanish?

This lesson was designed for first-year Spanish students (9th and 10th graders) over a period of 2 class times.

In order to prepare your students for involvement in this WebQuest, you may want to spend class time in advance reviewing and exploring Spanish-speaking countries (there are 28) by engaging them in various activities on the internet sites below:
