I created this Webquest to meet a course outcome for the English 102 class I teach. Once the Webquest is complete, students will take the information they have located and use it  to write a guided research paper. This guided research paper will address the question how do we eat ethically. Both the Webquest and the guided research paper will provide valuable practice in preparation for an extended, independent research paper they must complete by the end of the semester.

My English 102 class meets just once a week, so I have planned to complete this Webquest in 2 class sessions.

The jigsaw format allows us to cover more information in a shorter timeframe and also builds collaborative skills.

Standards

The Webquest will enable students to complete the following English 102 course writing requirement: "One paper of at least 5-7 pages that develops an argument based on at least five sources located using the research process, at least one of which must address a counterargument.

Credits

A variety of sources inspired this Webquest: The books The Omnivore's Dilemma, Fast Food Nation, Eating Animals, and Tomatoland: How Modern Industrial Agriculture Destroyed Our Most Alluring Fruit. Websites/organizations: Food Democracy Now, Slow Food, and Civil Eats.
Thank you to Professors Dale and James Snow of Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland for inspiring this critical examination of our food systems in the United States. Their graduate course We Are What We Eat: Food and American Identity was a tremendous and life-changing experience for me.
