This lesson was designed for freshman and sophomore students. The purpose of this web quest was to combine one concept from each of the five social studies strands into one lesson having them solve the question why did Zimbabwe collapse. The standards i chose were from the state of Arizona and they were:

  1. Concept 9: Postwar United States PO 1. Analyze aspects of Americas post World War II foreign policy: international
  2. PO 4. Analyze the effects of European and American colonialism on their colonies (e.g., artificially drawn boundaries, one-crop economies, creation of economic dependence, population relocation, cultural suppression
  3. PO 1. Compare the United States system of politics and government to other systems of the world (e.g., monarchies, dictatorship, theocracy, oligarchy, parliamentary, unitary, proportional elections).
  4. Concept 1: The World in Spatial Terms PO 1. Construct maps using appropriate elements (i.e., date, orientation, grid, scale, title, author, index, legend, situation).
  5. PO 6. Explain the effects of monetary policy on unemployment, inflation, and economic growth
I chose concept from differing points in their academic careers and created a common theme of focusing on Zimbabwe. This web quest is meant to strengthen their research and critical thinking skills while meeting state standards for social studies. I believe it will give the students a well rounded view of how all the differing areas in social studies come together to influence a nation.

The web quest cover five days because i feel it's important to have the students focus on one section at a time to receive a clear picture of how that event effects the entire nation. The students will by day five have a well rounded view of how each area impacts the other.
