WebQuest

Cultural Revolution Posters

Teacher Page

I made this web quest as part of an assignment for an education class about technology in the classroom.  It is meant to be used as part of a language class, but I think it could also work well in a history, social studies, or perhaps even an art class.  It is meant to be used in conjunction with a class period that gives a general overview of the Cultural Revolution (i.e. a history lecture). This period of time in Chinese history is particularly interesting to me, which made me inclined to be thorough as I was creating it.  Adjust it for your students as you see fit.

One note, if students use the posters off of chineseposters.net, a large chunk of the translation work will already be done for them, and there are even brief summaries of the historical contexts of the posters.  This might help overcome a time crunch and make the research aspect seem less daunting for your students.  If students want to choose a poster from one of the other pages, that's fine, but they will have to work harder on their background research.

Also, to do this web quest well, it would probably be worth your time to briefly teach students how to analyze works of art and propaganda images in general.  I realize that this will take time, but, in my opinion, the skill of thinking critically about images is one worthy of development since we live in a world that communicates by images more and more each day.  There is a link on the Process page to a website that briefly goes over how to analyze a work of art.  It would probably be good to take a gander at that before you teach your students what to do with these images.
