Dear teacher,

This webquest is designed for students who also have cooking classes, besides normal lessons such as, English, Maths.  But it can also be used for others. It is suitable for 3VMBO Kader and it has as goal to increase pupils creativity, and food and restaurant vocabulary.

The students will learn how to create a menu, they will learn to be creative when coming up with original names for the restaurant, for three dishes and designing a logo. They will also learn more about fruits, vegetables and healthy food and what is needed to make a good successful restaurant. Finally, the pupils will learn how to search for the information on the Internet and how to make a good use of it, and how to work in a group and be responsible for a specific task and contribute to the group product by supporting other members.

This project will take about seven lessons, including presentations. The teacher needs to introduce the students to vocabulary that is related to restaurants and ingredients, healthy food by showing useful links(see word document with links below on this page). During lesson four the teacher makes sure everybody is doing something.

In order to avoid the situation that some members are doing more than others, the teacher takes into consideration the following points: (from Kinkhorst "Tien tips om meeliften te voorkomen") (see pdf file below on this page)
1. The process is planned and everybody has different responsibilities.
2. The teacher checks working process.
3. Students tackle freeloaders themselves.

If you would like to know more about assessing group work, you can read the article 'The assessment of group work' by Graham Gibbs (see pdf file below on this page)

Theory on language teaching
According to professor Jack C Richards , one of the overarch principles of Communicative Language Teaching methodology is to link the different skills such as speaking, reading and listening, together, since they usually occur together in the real world. That's what we try to do with this webquest. By providing the students authentic material which they get to work with, they learn the following skills:
  • speaking: when doing their presentations and exchanging information with each other.
  • reading: they read various information on the internet, which they have to understand in order to make good choices on which information to use.
  • listening: they don't listen to any English audio material, but they have to listen to each other and the teacher in class when they are communicating about this project.
  • writing: the students have to write an individual report.

Staatsen also mentions, in her book Moderne Vreemde Talen in de onderbouw (P27) that a communicative approach of language teaching will stimulate the active and individual learning process of students. The students have to be active in order to finish this project successfully.
