What is an essay?

An essay is a piece of writing in which the author shapes, combines and organises factual information into a fictional form to write my essay an original whole. An essay is made up of complete sentences that are linked together, just like the material in a mother tongue class. The same rule applies to essays as to prose: the text must proceed in a coherent way. Length is not the decisive factor, but content.

Essay questions and answers are used in two situations. In the test situation, the student is required to provide essay answers. The second situation is when the courses are accompanied by essay assignments at home (home essay).

The essay is usually said to be somewhere between fiction and science: based on literature, the writer has freedom and creativity at his or her disposal, but must rely on facts and research, not on imagination. In the latter case, it is fiction. There are no references or notes, but it is usual to end the essay with a reference to the literature under the heading 'Literature' or 'Sources'. Short essays also do not use subheadings. In a longer essay, it is preferable to use subheadings. Attention should be paid to the readability of the text by using paragraph breaks.

The purpose of the essay is to find out how well the writer has internalised and assimilated what he has read, not to repeat what he has memorised but to produce a text that he has thought about. Plagiarism from the Internet (= copying, where the author "pastes" together bits and pieces of text from the Internet as if he had written the text himself) is not essay writing. Nowadays, it is also possible for a pupil to copy Finnish-language essays published on the internet and written by other pupils at home. This is also plagiarism. Proper use of the internet means that the writer internalises what he or she has read on the internet and writes it down on paper, filtered through his or her own head, and marks the website used as a source.

The essay should include personal reflection, thoughts and why questions. This example shows what is meant by personal reflection in the text. Through reflection, personal thoughts and why-questions, the writer explores the given topic. In this way, the essay does not remain superficial but deals with the issues in depth. Sometimes the topic of the essay is given in advance. In this case, you should find out for yourself whether the title contains something that determines the way the essay will be treated. It may be that you need to "compare", "analyse", "explain", "justify" something or "take a stand" on an argument. If you do not know the meaning of each term, ask your teacher.

The essay writer is trying to make a point or point of view of his or her choice on an buy a persuasive essay today.
