The Great Depression
Tasks
To answer the questions in the introduction, you need to "meet" those affected. As a young person in this time period, you will describe your "personal" experience during the Depression and that of three other people you meet on your trek across the country in search of better conditions. Your task is to write three letters or diary entries in which you discuss, in detail, the conditions and people you met. there is a list of resources which pertain to students and youth during the Depression. Based on the documents you find on these websites, create an identity (it can be similar or different from your own) from which to view how the Depression has affected other people. It is important to recognize what your perspective is and how that will affect the way you see, analyze, and interpret events.
The Great Depression affected people in too many ways for these letters or diary entries to recount so choose what aspects you wish to research carefully! There are many to choose from on the following pages of resources. Along with a links to written documents, there is also links to pictorial documents which should expand your understanding of this historical period. Along with your letters or diary entries, include a poem, song, drawing, or cartoon of your own creation which helps to communicate the experience.
Each project must:
contain historically accurate content.
be written in a style appropriate for your character.
be creative and clear.
provide a description of where you are and who you have met.
include a poem, cartoon, song, or drawing of your own creation that is appropriate to the time period and complementary to the situation/event/person being described.
be at least 2 pages
Use the first 4 websites to better understand the events and conditions of the Great Depression.
After reviewing the information, create a fictitious person who lived during the Great Depression and decide where you are going and why. Remember, this has to be historically accurate.
Then, follow the remaining 6 links to read biographies of people who actually lived during the Great Depression. Choose three of your favorite people to include in your journal entries or letters. Be sure to take notes about the people you learn about.
