Proviso West Curriculum Action Plan

Needs Assessment

Proviso West staff and student surveys and antedoctal evidence has shown a low level of student motivation for learning.

  • For many students this rejection of school occurs from a discontent between home environment and school culture (Richards, Brown, and Forde, 2006).
  • Providing holistic experiences that present information in meaningful, connected patterns allow learners to see more relevance in education (Lake,1994).
  • Interdisciplinary techniques build student’s academic and lifelong learning skills as well as contributing to personal growth (Jones, 2010).
  • Students and teachers alike will improve in the areas of communication, creativity, critical thinking, and general academics with interdisciplinary development and instruction (Jones).

The transformation team believes that an emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching will increase academic focus across the content areas, while also motivating students with culturally relevant units of study. With this project, we have the opportunity to model the culture of teamwork and collaboration we expect from our students. Also, by acknowledging and responding to the cultural characteristics within our school we can help all students see the value in education.
