Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy. He went to sea as a young boy, and spent most of his life at sea.

Columbus knew the world was round. He believed that by sailing west, instead of current route east around the coast of Africa, he would the East and the Spice Islands.

He moved to Portugal trying to get money to support his journey. He eventually got support from Ferdinand and Isabella, the king and queen of Spain.

In 1492 Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain with three ships: the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.

Why did he come to America?

Columbus wasn't actually looking for America. He was looking for a shorter route to the far east. There he would find valuable silks and spices.

Where did he land?

Columbus actually landed on a small island in the Bahamas which Columbus named San Salvador.

Columbus thought he had landed on the Spice Islands near India. This is why he named the people he met Indians.

Columbus died in 1506 still believing that he had found a new route to the East Indies.

The First Voyage of Christopher Columbus,1492-93—Discovery

Columbusset sail in search of the IndiesColumbusset sail from Palos, Spain on Friday, August 3, 1492, with his fleet of threeships—the Santa Maria, Niña, and Pinta. The choice of departure day wascurious, given the widely held superstition at the time that Friday, the day ofthe Lord’s crucifixion, was an unlucky day (Thomas). Nevertheless, Columbusseemed unperturbed by popular myths and ordered the anchor be raised thatFriday morning before dawn. On October 12, ironically also a Friday, thePintafired a cannon indicating that land had been sighted and in the earlyhours of the morning Columbus and his crew made landfall on what he quicklynamed San Salvador. The explorers immediately encountered bands of primitivenative inhabitants that Columbus called “Indians,” firmly believing that he hadreached the Indies as planned (Henige). Columbus’ journal describes the nativesas peaceful and simple people who were in awe of their sophisticated andadvanced visitors (Thomas).

Believing that he had reached a small, peripheralAsian island, Columbus proceeded onward and landed in Cuba on Sunday, October28, believing it to be Japan. Upon arrival, he dispatched emissaries north toseek out Genghis Khan or the Emperor of China (Ibid). Columbus remained utterlydeluded about his actual destination until the day he died, persistently maintainingthat he had reached the Indies.

Frustrated and perplexed by the primitive nature ofthe lands he was discovering, Columbus continued onward, arriving at the islandof Hispaniola (modern- day Haiti and the Dominican Republic), but was dealt asevere blow when the Santa Mariabecame shipwrecked and was destroyed. Withoutenough space aboard the remaining ships, Columbus endeavoured to create acolony on Hispaniola, leaving behind around 40 men. Following further troubles, including skirmishes with the natives and signs of mutiny within the crew,Columbus resolved to return home to Spain by the middle of January 1493. He hadalready made a major impact on both European and American history, however, byestablishing the first European colony in the New World.
