Solving word problems can be difficult if you don't know the right steps to take. But you cannot try to get right to the top, you have to tackle the problem one step at a time. Drawing a picture is almost always the best way to start a word problem. If the problem invloves some sort of graph, drawing a rough sketch on graph paper can be beneficial as well. You then want to write down whatever information is presented in the problem as best you can. Finally, you want to look at what the problem is asking. Look at what has been written down from the problem and ask yourself what you need to do with the information provided to get the answer you are looking for.
