PROCESS: This is a three-hour lesson.



FIRST HOUR: Team selection, assignment of individual roles in the team, research and brainstorming session.

The class will be divided into two teams:
  • THE REBELS representing SPECIAL EFFECTS
  • THE EMPIRE representing MUSICAL SCORE

SECOND HOUR: Debate

Each team will have 30 minutes each to debate their position.

The classroom debate will be organized as follows:

The Rebels:
  1. The Rebels will have 7 minutes to present their opening statement.  The Rebels  will be allowed to choose their own speaker who will represent them in the opening statement.
  2. After the opening statements, The Rebels will have their first speaker present the first point.  They will have a total of 3 minutes to state their position.  
  3. The Empire will have 2 minutes to ask The Rebels' first speaker questions.
  4. The Rebels will have the second speaker present the second point or argument for special effects.  They will have a total of 3 minutes to state their position.
  5. The Empire will have 2 minutes to ask the Rebels' second speaker questions.
  6. The Rebels wil have the third speaker present the third point or argument for special effects.  They will have a total of 3 minutes to state their position.
  7. The Empire will have 2 minutes to ask the Rebels' third speaker questions.
  8. The teacher/moderator will have 3 minutes to ask The Rebels questions or ask for any clarifications.  
  9. The Rebels will have 5 minutes to present their closing statements.

The Empire:
  1. The Empire will have 7 minutes to present their opening statement.  The Empire will be allowed to choose their own speaker who will represent them in the opening statement.
  2. After the opening statements, The Empire will have their first speaker present the first point.  They will have a total of 3 minutes to state their position.  
  3. The Rebels will have 2 minutes to ask The Empire's first speaker questions.
  4. The Empire will have the second speaker present the second point or argument for musical score.  They will have a total of 3 minutes to state their position.
  5. The Rebels will have 2 minutes to ask the Empire's second speaker questions.
  6. The Empire will have the third speaker present the third point or argument for musical score.  They will have a total of 3 minutes to state their position.
  7. The Rebels will have 2 minutes to ask the Empire's third speaker questions.
  8. The teacher/moderator will have 3 minutes to ask The Empire questions or ask for any clarifications.  
  9. The Empire will have 5 minutes to present their closing statements.


THIRD HOUR:
 Teacher will announce who won the debate.

And the winner is...

After both teams have presented their arguments, the teacher/moderator will choose the winner of the classroom debate.

  • Each student will write a persuasive essay

Each student will be required to write a persuasive one page essay where the student discusses why he or she chooses musical score, special effects or both as important components in film making.  The essay will be completed during class and will be graded.
