Process

Each day, groups will listen to direct lecture on Dr. Carver. The class will be divided into 5 groups of 4 people. Each group will work collaboratively and have the following assignments in each group. A leader will make sure that everyone is heard in the group and focuses on completing all the tasks, timekeeper, encourages the group to stay on task and notifies you when you are halfway and close to the end of your allotted time, errand monitor, briefly leaves the group to get supplies or to request help from the teacher when group members may need clarity or unsure about subject matter or which direction to go and notetaker. This group member writes down important facts for the group to discuss and help to decide what is most important to include in presentation. Everyone in the group has to take part and work collaboratively. The errand monitor can come to me anytime during your group sessions.

Step 1:  Each day time will be allotted to the groups to work on their project. Get together with your group.  You will need pencil, paper, your Social Studies Journal, and laptops for each group member. All students will take an active role in your group. You can begin by watching "A Weed is a Flower" to provide additional information on your subject. This video will spark your interest to learn more. Each group will alternatively move to the classroom library and read the Rookie Biography on Dr. Carver's life. What is not completed on the assigned day, it will be picked up on the next day. You then can progress with puzzles, games, more videos, self-check quizzes  reading comprehension sheets and other books that are listed for you. Additionally, feel free to seek out other resources that may be of help to you.

Step 2    Print out the timeline for George Washington Carver under Introduction. Highlight the important facts that you want your audience to know and what you will use in your presentation. Use the links below and read and watch video clips  about your famous African American.  Write down important information-keeping in mind that knowing his favorite color, or his shoe size is not important information.
You will decide with all the information that you have obtained, what will be useful to help you with your presentation, what is not important, and how you will present in the final outcome. Do reflect back on the rubric and checklist often.

Step 3 You  are now ready to put all that you have learned before your audience: teacher and classmates. As a group, you will choose a puppet show, skit, or oral/video presentation to present before the class. Again, please review the rubric and the checklist to ensure that you understand and you are clear of the expectations for this project. Everyone in your group has to take part in the presentation. Introduction of each group member is required as well as introducing your historical figure, date and place  of birth, date of death, his contributions, what he did to become famous, can we use what he invented today, why or why not? etc. and include what else you feel is important for us to know.
Practice, practice  with your group in school and at home  in an energetic and clear voice to make sure that you can be heard and understood.
