Give A HOOT!
Process
- 1. Choose one from the list of characters of Hoot that you want to follow through the four themes of the story.
They include: Curly, Officer Delinko, Roy, Beatrice and Mullet Fingers.
2. Use the resource links to investigate each theme. You may use the information from the book at any time.
3. Compile appropriate information from the materials that will be helpful to you in relating your character to the topic of the four themes.
- Theme #1 : Bullying
Each of the characters are involved in bullying or being bullied. Give at least two examples from the story where your character bullies someone else or is bullied by another character.
- Explain how the author presents the tension of the bullying experience to the reader. How are the character's feelings written? Give an example.
- Briefly explain a time when you may have bullied or been bullied by another. How did you feel about it? What did you do about it or want to do about it?

- Theme #2: Character Relationships
Choose your character from this list and explain how they interacted with each other in the story.
Explain from your character's point of view, how he/she feels toward another individual.
How did their relationship change from the beginning to the end of the story? Be specific.

- Theme #3: Endangered Species
The symbol of environmental issues, the Burrowing Owl, could very well be used for issues of today. Investigate these three types of wildlife from the story to find:
- In what types of habitat they thrive?
- What they feed upon ?
- Are they endangered?
- Give a listing of at least ten interesting and appropriate facts of each.

- Theme #4: Character Internal Conflict
Internally you say to yourself, I should do this and then, you change your mind and say you shouldn't do whatever it is. Your character may have done the same in the story. Did your character act with his/her head versus his/her heart for the environmental situation with the burrowing owls? What led you to believe so?
Trust
Describe who your character trusted in the story. Did that trust changed in any way? Stronger? Weaker?
Describe if your character broke a trust,and why he/she may have done so. Give an example from the story.
If trust grew between your character and another, describe what occurred. How did trust make that character feel in the end?

Fibbing
- Have you ever heard of tell a "little white lie"? This is said to be a little story that isn't all true and it hurts no one. Is there really such a lie? Some of our characters were caught up in such experiences.
- Explain a situation that your character may have been in to get caught in explaining a half-thuth or telling a story that was not all accurate.

Coercion
- Once you are comfortable with a definition of this, identify an experience when your character was coerced into doing something through peer pressure. Be specific.
- Identify a time when you may have been coerced into doing something that was making you feel uneasy about doing it. Explain what it was and how you dealt with it.

Revenge
- AHHH! Sweet revenge! Or is it really sweet?
- What led your character to be labeled a bully? Be specific. Who did he bully? Why did he bully?
- Was your character being bullied? By whom? Why?
- Describe a situation where your character was bullied and was able to give revenge. Describe how your character felt when the revenge event was completed. Was revenge sweet?
- Tell of a time when you were bullied and were able to get revenge on your bully.

Harmony
- Describe how your character developed a place in harmony with the environment.

4. Project Time!
Using the compiled information from this quest,
- Create a visual which will protray the personal character traits of your chosen HOOT character;
- Choose one type of medium from the list; or,
- You may suggest a medium for approval from your teacher.

video, rap/song, illustrated booklet, or pop-up book.
