The Boston Massacre - Riot or Massacre?

You have been placed in groups so that you can help each other in your learning. An important part of the activities will be to assign duties to each group member. Work as a team to find solutions within your group. You may also ask members of other groups or the teacher for help if you can not proceed on an activity.

Historical Research

Each day of this WebQuest you will be using historical research to learn about the Boston Massacre. Research will be resources (the Internet) to find important information that will help us understand the causes and effect of the Boston Massacre.

Day 1 Activity

Step 1: Use these links to learn about the historical events leading to the Boston Massacre.

Step 2: Make a timeline of the events leading up to the Boston Massacre. The timeline should be done on a large poster board with color, pictures, and descriptions. These will be put up on the walls of our classroom. 

The timeline must be in order from left to right. Use the earliest date on the left; and the most recent date on the right. The poster must include several different colors and pictures.

Step 3: Present the timeline poster board to the class.

Day 2 Activity:

Step 1: Watch the Boston Massacre reenactment video.

Step 2: Picture yourselves as reporters on the scene after the Boston Massacre. Have your group develop 5 questions to ask the witnesses.  

Step 3: Have your group use a medium poster board with the five questions numbered in sequence 1-5 with a title.

Day 3 Activity:

Step 1: Watch the video Boston Massacre, Riot or Massacre?

Step 2: As a group reflect on the perspective of the British and American colonists on the Boston Massacre.

Step 3: As a group, answer the following Boston Massacre questions in an essay:

1. Would your perspective of the British presence in the America affect the witnesses on what happed during the event?

2. Would a British and an American news correspondent report the event differently?

3. How could American colonists interpret the news of the event differently than a witness?

Day 4 Activity:

Step 1: Have your group discuss and reflect on the British and American perspectives pertaining to the Boston Massacre. 

Step 2: As a group, write an essay on the British and American perspectives on the Boston Massacre.

Step 3: Use the following words in the essay: antagonism, acquitted, atrocities, riot, and massacre.

Day 5 Activity:

Step 1: Your group should reflect on the cause and effect of the French and Indian War, The Sugar Act, Stamp act of 1765, Townshend acts, Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, in regards to the American Revolution.

Step 2: As a group, design a "cause and event" poster. Have your group use a medium poster board with three columns and a title. Title the columns from left to right, event, cause, and effect. Briefly describe each event, cause, and effect. Be prepared to present the poster to the class.
