Process

Step One:

To begin your journey, your job is to locate the butterfly garden and figure out where you would typically find a butterfly. Hint: Butterflies are cold-blooded. Define what cold-blooded means and this will lead down to the right path of finding the butterfly garden.

In other words, research where you may find a butterfly (the environment they live in) and record your findings. Write down two to three sentences for your findings.

Step Two:

You have now discovered where you can find the butterfly garden. The butterflies are everywhere! You don't want to raise just any old butterfly, you want to start at the beginning where you are able to explore all the stages of the cycle. Your next job is to find butterfly eggs, also known as the first stage of the butterfly cycle. Watch the provided video to see how butterflies lay their eggs and where. What are they called when they are hatched? Hint: Put your scientific hats on and use other resources to figure out what the scientific name of this stage is.

Watch the first two and a half minutes of the video. Observe your findings of where the butterfly layed it eggs, what the egg looked like when it hatched, and predict the next stage of the cycle. Use other resources to confirm the accuracy of your prediction. Remember to use its scientific name for this stage as well!

Step Three:

Now that you have made your predictions about what you think the next stage of the cycle is as well as tested your theory, you can confirm the next stage of the cycle is the cocoon stage! It's a sad time because this means that you will not see your caterpillar for a while. However, this is also the coolest stage because, inside the cocoon, your caterpillar is growing into a beautiful butterfly.

Your next job is to record where you may find the cocoon, what the scientific name is, and draw what it looks like!

Step Four:

It's time to meet your fully grown butterfly! You have done such a good job raising it as your own and witnessing the 4 wonderful stages of its life! But OH NO! It looks like it may have flown away and escaped the butterfly garden! The only way to get your butterfly back is to complete the game that tests your knowledge on the 4 stages of the butterfly cycle. Are you up for the challenge?
