An Introduction to Real Numbers

Phase 1

• First, you will watch this brief tutorial on how to categorize real numbers.

• Second, you will use the interactive number line on MathisFun.com to see what happens when you move from the positive side of the number line to the negative side of the number line. 
• Start at "1" on the interactive number line. Click on the number "1"
• Count 4 spaces to the left and click the number that you land on, you should land on -3. Click on "-3". 
• What math problem did you just create? 1 - 4 = -3

• Last, you will read the chart on rules for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of integers. 

Phase 2 (40 min)

• With one partner, solve the riddles and the real world problem using your understanding of the subsets of numbers and adding/subtracting positive and negative numbers using the number line.

• Next, with your same partner, take turns answering the questions. As you get each addition and subtraction problem correct, you'll gain fun prizes within the game. If you get all of them right, you'll win the treasure!
