Part One:

The first part of the assignment will be individual work. You will answer the questions about the history of the periodic table. Scientists have been studying and discovering elements for hundreds of years.

1. Who is considered the "Father of the Periodic Table"?

2. How did he organize the periodic table?

3. Although the precious metals like gold and silver have been known about for hundreds of years, what was the first scientific discovered element? What year?

4. How many elements were discovered by 1869?

5. What property is used today to organize the elements? What particle is responisble for this property?

6. Mendeleev has an element named after him. Name three elements that have been named after famous scientists.

Part Two:
In a group, assigned by numbers 1-8, you will complete your section based on the number you were assigned.

Group 1.

1. What are the Group 1A elements known as?

2. What are the elements in Group 1A? Include symbols.

3. What are some properties of the Group 1A Elements?

4. What is the exception (as far as properties go) to the Group 1A elements?

5. Electron configuration of sodium.

Group 2A

1. What are the Group 2A elements known as?

2. What are the elements in Group 2A? Include symbols.

3. What are some properties of the Group 2A Elements?

4. Electron configuration of calcium.

Group 3B-12B

1. What are the Group 3B-12B elements known as?

2. Name some (at least seven) of the elements in Group 3B-12B.

3. What are some properties of the Group 3B-12B Elements?

4. Electron configuration of iron.

Metalloids/Semi Metals

1. Where are the metalloids located on the periodic table?

2. What are elements are considered metalloids?

3. Which elements act more like metals in reactions?

4. Which elements ace more like nonmetals in reactions?

Nonmetals

1. In which groups are the nonmetals located.

2. Name the nonmetals.

3. Name the diatomic elements.

Group 7A

1. What are these elements known as?

2. Name the Group 7A elements. Include the symbols.

3. Which element is the most reactive?

4. Electron configuration of chlorine.

Group 8A

1. What are these elements known as?

2. Why are they called this?

3. Name the Group 8A elements. Include symbols.

4. Electron configuration of neon.

Lanthanides & Actinides

1. Where are the lanthanides located on the periodic table?

2. Name the lanthanides. Include symbols.

3. List three properities of lanthanides.

4. Where are the actinides located on the periodic table?

5. Name the actinides. Include symbols.

6. List three properities of actinides.

Part Three:
Larger groups containing one person of each number will come together. It is your job to teach the rest of your group about your section so they can complete the other questions.

Part Four:
Individually, you will complete the "Mystery Periodic Table" that is found at the bottom of the page.
