1.  History Presentation

Most of you will already be proficient with Microsoft Powerpoint and may have access to it at home, so that may your program of choice for completion of this task.  If you do not have access to Powerpoint, see the resource section below for link to a free online presentation program called Canva.

Include in your presentation's content:

a) The origins and purpose of the first french horns, the various names that have been associated with the versions of the instrument as it evolved, the people behind its development, and different modern versions available for purchase today.

b) Cut and paste the image of the horn below (in the resource section) into your presentation.  Include terms for all of the labelled parts of the horn.

2. Tutorial Videos

You will need to create a Youtube account if you do not already have one.  See the resource section below for tutorial videos that serve as excellent examples.  Use the same video creation software we have used in the past for making video performance playing tests.

Specific content for each video:

a) The first video you make will be for beginning horn students to view during their first week learning the instrument.  Include: How to hold the horn, correct posture, forming an embouchure, right hand placement, mouthpiece buzzing, and tone production.

b) The second video will be for these same students to watch at the end of their first year of horn study.  It is your job to show them some more advanced concepts they will need to know as they prepare themselves for high school level music. Include in this video:  A discussion of how to use the trigger on a double horn, how to play a concert F major scale, and intonation tendencies of the horn.

3.  Playlist

Explore the thousands of videos available on Youtube featuring professional horn players performing solo or chamber works.  Select a few that you feel will give young players an excellent "aural image" of a characteristic horn tone.  Create a playlist of at least 5 videos you select so they can be shared with our future horn players!
