Process

Day One:

Begin by introducing the concept of Ordinal Numbers. Propose the following questions: What is an ordinal number? How or when do we use ordinal numbers? Students will watch a short educational video on ordinal numbers via the internet http://www.turtlediary.com/kindergarten-games/math-games/ordinal-numbers.html.The video will teach children how to count using ordinal numbers 1-10.

We will then put our new knowledge of ordinal numbers into action. We saw in the video a line of children who were described as being in an ordinal position. We create our own line of students to recognize and identify ordinal numbers 1st-10th.Students will be given an index card with either an ordinal number word (first, second, third) or an ordinal number abbreviation (1st, 2nd,3rd). In a series of teacher directed questions students will identify different ordinal positions in our line.

We will end this activity by applying ordinal numbers to other real world examples and construct a list of other uses of ordinal numbers. For example in a running race we know that the runner that runs the fastest is rewarded 1st place.Likewise, the next runner is rewarded 2nd place and so on. We will discover there are several uses for ordinal numbers like sequencing events in stories, directions, contest, and even baking.

Day Two:

Students will participate in math centers to practice and reinforce their understanding of ordinal numbers.

o   Center 1: Math Game: Ordinal Numbers (Online) http://www.turtlediary.com/kindergarten-games/math-games/ordinal-numbers.html.Students will navigate through 7 levels of counting and identification exercises.Students will also practice identifying ordinal position by placing race cars in the correct ordinal placing after individual races .http://www.toytheater.com/ordinal-number.php

o   Center 2: Students will practice identifying ordinal numbers by doing the activeInspire activities.

o   Center 3: Students will be given picture cards that represent steps in commonly practiced activities (brushing teeth, gardening, washing hands) and will practice putting them in order. Once the cards are in order, students will explain the process by using ordinal numbers. For example: First you dig a hole, second you place the seeds in the hole, third you cover the hole with dirt, etc.

Day Three:

Students will apply their knowledge of ordinal numbers to make a pizza (Class Project).Students will be broken into small groups. Each group will be given the ingredients and tools need to complete this task (Dough, sauce, toppings, pan, spoon, etc.)While making their pizza, students will use a digital camera to record each step in the pizza making process. They will also create a recipe card that illustrates each step using ordinal numbers.

HOMEWORK:Students will work with their parents to create a recipe card for one of their favorite family dishes. These will be shared at the beginning of math class the following day.

Day Four:

Students will create a PowerPoint Presentation of their pizza recipes using the pictures taken during the activity.

Day Five:

Each group will present their PowerPoint presentation to the class and discuss their recipe using ordinal number vocabulary.
