Peripheral Devices

Process

Stage I. Preparation.

1. Read the Introduction to the web quest and watch a video of what peripheral devices are in general - see link "An overview of peripherals".
2. Read the task section carefully. You will be given the general guidelines for conducting your research.
3. Study the evaluation criteria so that you could get an idea of how your culminating project will be assessed.
4. Here is a link to the digital wall which you are to use as a platform for collaborative work: Padlet page (the same link can be found below on the "Process" page). Padlet - is a service enabling you to post your thoughts using electronic sticky notes on a shared interactive noticeboard. You double-click on the wall, type in your short message into the box and publish the post. It is a convenient way to share your ideas or links, do brainstorming, participate in discussions, arrange group work, publish announcements, etc. If you stick your notes sequentially rather than in a chaotic way, you will be able to read and reconsider your discussion later on.
5. Make up your mind what category of peripheral devices you will be scrutinizing: input, output, storage of mobile computer devices. Make up 4 groups of 3 to 5 students in each. Use the padlet page (see the link above) to discuss group formation and finally publish the names of the members for each group.
6. Study the links - the webliography - given in the "Process" section (see the links below) and make a similar list of links relevant to your study area. Make sure that the links provide you with the information that is interesting, comprehensive and present-day. Don't use Wikipedia as a sourse of information for your project, think of more reliable sources such as international university libraries, research organizations, official sites of hardware manufacturers, scientific journals, speeches and lectures from leading academics, scientists or software developers, news agencies, other sources of information that you can trust. Work individually to dig for information and then share your links on the padlet page.
7. Work in groups to compile a list of relevant links (a hotlist). Share the links on the padlet page and save them as you will have to include the webliography in your final project. For your convenience you can use social bookmarking services such as Delicious, Diigo or Pinterest (you will have to create an account prior to using these services).

Stage II. Research.

1. Study, analyze and critically assess each link in your hotlist in search of the factual information about each type of the peripheral, including the technology and how it works, the strengths and weaknesses of the technology, the technical characteristics of this particular type of hardware, the spheres of its application.
2. Contemplate on whether the technology will continue to evolve or become obsolete in the near future. Find and watch a video on the prospects for the technology development by an ICT expert.
3. Compare various types of devices within each category of peripherals.
4. Dwell on the latest technological advancements in gadgets, computers, ICT in general. Are there any striking ones? Which of them do you think are worth developing further?
5. Make your own conclusions, predictions.

Stage III. Presentation.

1. Write up the results of your research. Include the webliography links.
2. Make a slide presentation to include in your final project.
3. Collaborate on your final project.
4. Present your project in class and get peer-feedback. Present your project in class and get peer-feedback.
5. Get assessed by the tutor.
