Murder in the White City

Process

The plan is composed of TWO major parts:

WEEK 1: RESEARCH TIME
Research time is important! Creative Non-Fiction is based in historical evidence. The creative part is the author filling in the blanks, and using vivid description and imagery, but the plot and story is all historical fact. That means that you must have as much viable information as possible. Below is a day-by-day schedule of what we will be doing for Week 1:
  1. Day 1 will be spent collecting topics. That means that you need to decide what specific historical event you want to write your piece on. I will be collecting topics on a small index card. Have your index card with your specific topic and full name on it. Then, I will give a lesson on how to do viable, unbiased, efficient research.
  2. Day 2 will be spent in the library. We will meet in class, I will explain library procedures, and then we will go down, and half of the class will be using the books that the librarian and I have pulled for you based on your topic choices, and the other half will be using the computers to do internet research.
  3. Day 3 will be also be spent in the library, but those of you that used computers last time will be using books, and those who used books last time will be using the computers. (By the end of Day 2 and Day 3, you should have a minimum of 3 book sources, and a minimum of 3 internet sources.)
  4. Day 4 will be spent in the classroom. We will be briefly talking about how to properly cite sources, answering questions about research.
  5. Day 5 will be spent in the classroom, we will talk about MLA Formatting, writing tips for Creative Non-Fiction, (They are attached below). (By the end of Day 4 and Day 5, you should have at least 2 sheets of notes.)
Your assignment for the weekend, is to create a works cited page, and to begin working on your rough drafts. I do not recommend procrastinating your writing. Do your best.

WEEK 2: WRITING TIME
Writing time is just as important as research time! You now have to find a way to properly incorporate your research into a creative, entertaining way. This is so much more effective than a report because it tells a story. You should already have your works cited, and the makings of a rough draft, as well as some notes by the beginning of this week. Below is a day-by-day schedule of what we will be doing for Week 2:
  1. Day 1 will be spent in the classroom. This is for specific, individual questions about your rough drafts. Attached below is a video that offers some tips for Creative Non-Fiction. Refer to Larson's book for examples of how to incorporate research into an interesting story.
  2. Day 2 will be spent in the classroom. You will be working in facilitated discussion groups of 3. I want you guys to read over what each other have and give your honest but respectful opinions of what you read. Asking your companions for second opinion is a fantastic writing technique. It will be very helpful. Take your peers' commentary and apply it where you see fit. Try to finish your rough drafts for homework
  3. Day 3 will be spent individually writing in class. If you have not finished your rough draft, this is a great time to do so. If you have finished your rough draft, this is a great time for me to do final checks, and for you to do final proofreading. For homework, you should begin working on your final drafts.
  4. Day 4 will be spent on reflection. How do you think you have done so far? We will have an open discussion. Also, we will begin signing up for presentation dates. For the next couple of weeks, I want one student to present each day, at the end of class. Final drafts are due tomorrow!
  5. Day 5 the students will turn in the final drafts in a folder, and we will prepare for the next lessons and readings. Students should also return their copies of the books we have read in class.(Your presentations will begin next week, and they are simply a read-aloud of your story. OR I can print out copies of your story, and make it an assigned reading for your classmates! It is your choice!)
